Koko Black - Carlton

Koko Black - Carlton

For all of us who have ever felt a bit down on our luck, we all know that one of the best ways to pick ourselves up is with a little bit of help from something the Aztecs like to call gold. And what we know to be chocolate. And there is no better place to drown ones sorrows in rich, chocolately goodness than Koko Black.

Founded by Shane Hills in 2003, Koko Black is set apart from the San Churro’s and Starbucks of our time with its elegant attitude towards providing a satisfying customer service dripping in sweetness. Each restaurant is exquisitely designed in a uniform fashion featuring dark mahogany wood furnishings, tall shelves filled to the brim with chocolate books and take-away goodies, and the enticingly long line of truffles protected under the glass cabinet which is so conveniently positioned so that you can’t avoid it on your way into or out of the store.

The menu offers everything you could possibly imagine but there’s one condition: that thing must have chocolate in it. From cafe mochas to chocolate pecan tarts, you will be spoilt for choice (which, of course, is the reason you came here.) But don’t be tempted to try everything at once: Koko’s dishes are vehemently rich and as Julie Andrews once said, only a teaspoon of sugar helps the medicine go down, not the entire packet. Revel by all means in the gloriousness of Belgian Chocolate Mousse Martini, the devilish Chocolate Walnut Brownie and “Creamy hazelnut praline ice cream topped with bresillienne hazelnuts and a chocolate garnish” (straight from the menu that one) but be patient in trying the entire menu.

In my case, I was having a ridiculously shit day and decided that I would not only have the Chocolate Mocha Hot Chocolate but also the Belgian Spoil consisting of a chocolate
cake, two Belgian chocolates, a shortbread, chocolate ice cream and chocolate mousse. To say I was in chocolate heaven was an understatement. Not thinking about the ridiculous number of calories that I was probably about to add to my wasteline, I delicately selected each individual offering, first trying them on their own, then in combinations and then seeing what the whole bally-lot would taste like together.

The experience was amazing and Koko’s provides you with a 360 sensory perspective. The smell of the coffee machine; the smooth sounds of French music played over the soundsystem; the numerous sights within the shop from the chocolatiers making their daily wares to the decorations; the tangible sensation as your fingertips swirl across the surface of the plate to grab any crumbs; and finally, that indescribable, spellbinding, speechless explosion of taste that enters your mouth with each bite.

Needless to say, I left Koko’s in a much better mood and encourage any of you who are having a bad day or just want some time alone to smell the chocolate roses, to take a trip to Koko Black.

Location: Koko Black is situated in numerous locations around Australia, their most recent store appearing in the Claremont Quarter in Perth. For Melbournians, try the Carlton salon or Collins St for convenience and style.
